Looking for Lilith Theatre Company
Legal Name: Looking for Lilith Theatre
Looking for Lilith (LFL) is an ensemble theatre company that creates productions and programming through reexamining history and questioning today from women’s perspectives, a practice that frequently uncovers unheard voices. LFL productions and programming serve adults, youth, and children locally, nationally, and internationally. In addition to producing existing work, LFL creates original devised plays, which refers to a variety of group collaborative playwriting activities. LFL has developed our devising process through training in Educational Theatre, Youth Theatre Devising, Composition Exercises, Viewpoints, and Theatre of the Oppressed. We seek to use the creation and performance of these original plays as a vehicle for opening dialogue between communities, and individuals, who have disparate opinions. LFL has a strong commitment to education and our community. Through outreach programs, they guide participants in dramatic play, devising, and theatrically sharing their discoveries in a way that gives voice to members of our society who have historically been underrepresented. Through these programs as well as their productions, LFL helps show the value of multiple perspectives on history and today. Programming Overview The artistic and educational content varies by program and can be adapted to fit the needs of the school or community partner we are working with. Many of our programs focus on the creative process with a low stakes sharing but can have a fuller performative aspect if the school/partner desires. Drama Residencies (grades K-12) In our K-12 in-school students use the tools of the actor (voice, body, imagination, concentration and cooperation) to explore the content of the residency or workshop. Through this process participants learn curricular content as well as practice their actor tools, learn character development and beginning scene creation. We offer specific residency as described below and can also develop custom residencies with a school or partner. Journey of Success skills are practiced in these residencies. Artifacts can be created through videos of scene work and writings created in the class. Study guides are provided for teachers that include pre and post residency activites. Afterschool Programming (grades K-5) Our afterschool and summer programs focus on building theatrical skills and particularly the actor tools of voice, body, imagination, concentration and cooperation. Younger students focus on story drama, acting out children's stories and folktales. Older students practice actor tools, character development, scene study and character development through short play scripts or playwriting. All build social emotional skills and provide opportunities to practice literacy skills. Journey of Success skills are practiced. We video the sharings at the end of the sessions. Students have used these videos as artifacts for their defenses. Collaborative Playwriting (grades 4-12) In these programs LFL teaching artists bring our devising (collaborative playwriting) structure and process while the participants provide the content based on the topic they choose for the play. Teachers can also select a specific curricula topic to explore. Because the specific content is dependent on the group, students can participate in the program multiple times, each time having a different experience and exploring different content, while continuing to build their devising skills and other theater skills such as acting and design. The plays themselves are a reflection on their learning and plays created can be used as artifacts in their Journey to Success defenses. In School Performance (grades 3-12) LFL offers touring productions of our original works, interactive plays exploring social issues to school. Specific productions vary from year to year. LFL also has a collection of virtual performances that are pre-recorded. These can be shared with a teacher and include a live talk back with artists and a lesson plan. LFL has partnered with JCPS for over 15 years bringing interactive plays around cyberbullying and internet safety to schools with our play CHOICES and MAC’s WORLD. That program is currently on hold but it is an example of our long term relationship with JCPS. The Elementy, middle and high school version of that show have been shared at schools throughout the district.

Your Story, Your Way: A play-building Residency
Program ID: PRG00320Your stories, your way! Have you ever wanted to create a play that explores ideas, issues and themes that matter to you? Students explore real-life issues that matter to them, building confidence, creativity, and communication skills. At a time in their lives when youth may feel like few adults take them seriously, we want to give them the chance to express who they are and what is important to them, in a safe, trusting, and fun environment. Participants create original scenes through devising—a collaborative theatre process that centers their voices and experiences. Each residency is tailored to your group or your curriculum goals. Young people are empowered to speak up, think critically, and connect through storytelling—with lasting impact in and beyond the classroom. GirlSpeak Version Compelled by research indicating that girl's self-esteem plummets at age 12, LFL created GirlSpeak to provide a supportive, noncompetitive space where girls can explore their own voices. Just as describe above the girls create a play about what is most important to them. This program is open to all youth of marginalized genders (i.e. girl, young woman, trans, non-binary). This program can be adapted to any time frame. Shorter programs create scenes, Mid-size programs create 10 minute plays, Longer programs create one act plays that can be fully produced. Project can include the creation of the play with a simple sharing or a more fully produced public performance depending on partner needs.
