Peace Education Program

Legal Name: Peace Education Program, Inc.

JCPS Vendor FRYSC Partner

Our mission: The Peace Education Program strengthens communities and schools by training youth and adults to build and sustain positive relationships. We do this by providing learning experiences to reduce violence, enhance personal integrity and foster mutual respect. We teach conflict resolution, peer mediation and prejudice reduction. Our message for adults who participate in our programs: Believe in your young people! Conflict is normal and a natural and inevitable part of life. Handled properly, conflict can provide an opportunity for change, growth, and greater understanding. Trying to eliminate conflict is impossible. What we can do is focus on the feelings, interests, and concerns behind the conflict and explore ways the conflict can be resolved. There are three different styles of dealing with conflict - confrontation, avoidance, and problem solving. Each style is appropriate in certain situations and can be used with more or less thoughtfulness. In teaching conflict resolution and mediation skills, one goal is to help young people and the adults in their lives to stop and think before responding to a conflict.

Peer Mediation

Program ID: PRG28452

Just as there are certain factors that escalate conflict, experience tells us that it is possible to decrease conflict by providing young people opportunities to: Build relationships and understanding across friendship and cultural circles Show and be shown respect Have their side of the story heard Learn to listen to the other side of the story Be part of making a difference in their classroom, home and community Practice making other choices when in conflict Be respectfully corrected and disciplined by an adult During our Peer Mediation training we outline a training process that engages and affirms young people while offering them tools to help themselves and their peers resolve disputes. This training provides students and adults with the communication, cooperation and problem solving skills they need to stand up for themselves and solve their conflicts peacefully. Peer Mediation uses a classic mediation process at the beginning to model behaviors for the disputants that allow conciliation to take place. Our ultimate purpose is to empower all students to negotiate for themselves. We want to encourage all students to take control of their own conflicts.
